How not to make croutons: butter leftover bread, place in oven under broiler, witness bread catch fire, panic, throw blackened cookie sheet with flaming discs of bread onto the landing outside of front door, then, and only then, decide to look up "how to make croutons " online. Sigh. Omit fire for croutons without charcoal flavor.
Additional note: Vinegar, lemon juice, and cloves were successful at removing charred bread smell but now I can't get rid of the vinegar smell. Oh, the humanity. :(
